Melon Margarita
JUMP TO:
Intro
This is a pretty straightforward juicy variation of a Margarita in that it includes a silver tequila, citrus, and sugar/agave. I HATE super sweet drinks so for this drink I use a lot of fruit to add sweetness instead of straight-up sugar. This one is perfect for a hot summer day spent on rooftops, in the park, etc.
For the tequila I use Fortaleza’s Tequila Blanco -- for standard margs you use silver/blanco tequilas, which are an unaged and pure agave expression. Once you start using aged tequilas you introduce a lot of flavors related to barrel aging (e.g. caramel, oak) so you’d really need to adjust the flavor profile for a marg. I really like Fortaleza’s true and clean agave flavor.
DO NOT talk to me about Casamigos...I really don’t like the flavor of their Blanco, there’s WAYYY too much vanilla in it and it’s masking that distinct agave freshness. Having worked at a spirits company before, I DO appreciate what Casamigos has done to boost the popularity of tequila overall in the industry, but I’m still not a fan of their tequilas’ artificial flavors. Fortaleza is a little on the pricier side (I bought the Blanco for ~ $65) and I would consider it a sippable tequila (neat). If you’re looking to upgrade your tequila game, I would give Fortaleza a try. If you’re looking for a better-priced blanco tequila for cocktails, one that I knew pretty renowned Mexican bartenders would use is called Cimarron. I’ve personally never tried it but I heard that it is a good blanco tequila for mixing!
For each cocktail:
2 oz blanco tequila (I use Fortaleza’s Tequila Blanco)
½ lime’s-worth juice
2 cups’-worth of fresh honeydew chunks
1 TBSP cane sugar (or simple syrup)
1 sprig of fresh mint
Granish: tajin + kosher salt rim; lime wheel
For each cocktail:
